Sound Business Advice

One of my early mentors in my career constantly told me that perception is reality.  If someone does not understand what they are being told, it is usually because the communicator is not speaking or writing clearly. 

I often ask myself when I am reading, viewing (television), or listening to someone, "What does that mean?"  The communicator usually knows what they are saying, or writing.  The problem is that the audience is not made up of mind readers so the message is not always plainly understood.

The best advice for all of this is don't assume what you are selling or promoting is obvious to your audience. You should always read what you have written or created several times to make sure the subject is thoroughly communicated in a way that is clear to the reader.  I have found recently that when I thought that the group and I were on the "same page," we were not even reading the same book.

Are You Helping Realtors?

Certified To Originate (CTO)

I know.  Another fancy term has made it to the front of the line.  Certified To Originate is really all about the training and education needed to source business, and originate loans.  Believe it or not, just possessing a license does not mean one is ready to originate loans.

All that a license does is prove that you took some classes, and studied as a prerequisite for sitting for the state examination.  None of that prepares a person for the real world of residential real estate lending.  None of my education prepared me for real estate lending.  What I learned came from actual lending experience, and training from people who have done the work.  Those people were willing to share their knowledge with me.

The CTO program at Essex Mortgage is simple:

  • Orientation at corporate so the recruit knows how Essex Mortgage originates and closes loans.
  • Training on the loan products that Essex Mortgage actually closes.
  • Learning how to price a loan when the recruit actually receives an inquiry.
